LAUNCH DELAY

The launch of the Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft was postponed from the end of September to November 14, 2011 due to the unsuccessful launch of the Progress M-12M unmanned cargo spacecraft on August 24, 2011. The cause of the incident was a clogged fuel line leading to the engine gas generator of the third stages RD-0110 of the upper stage of the Soyuz-U spacecraft. After the loss of the Progress M-12M, all Russian manned space flights were temporarily suspended due to the similarity between the failed engine and the third stage engine used on the Soyuz-FG manned launch vehicle. On October 30, 2011, Russia successfully launched the Progress M-13M cargo spacecraft on a Soyuz-U launch vehicle, thus clearing the way for the launch of the Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft.

LAUNCH

Soyuz TMA-22 was launched on schedule from the Gagarin’s Start launch site at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 04:14:04 UTC on November 14, 2011. Soyuz commander Anton Shkaplerov was in the center seat of the Soyuz, with flight engineer Anatoly Ivanishin to his left and NASA astronaut Daniel Burbank to his right. The Soyuz-FG rocket with the Soyuz TMA-22 was launched in a snowstorm, with strong winds and temperatures down to -5 °C (23 °F). However, the conditions were considered acceptable for the launch.

The rocket followed its nominal ascent trajectory and successfully placed the Soyuz TMA-22 into orbit approximately nine minutes after liftoff. On the orbit the spacecraft deployed two solar panels and communications antennas according to the flight plan.

DOCKING

Soyuz TMA-22 docked with the ISS at 05:24:08 UTC on November 16, 2011, about nine minutes earlier than planned. The spacecraft docked with the Poisk Mini Research Module MRM-2 over the South Pacific Ocean. The Soyuz crew entered the ISS at around 06:39 UTC and were greeted by Expedition 29 crew members Mike Fossum, Sergey Volkov and Satoshi Furukawa. Before the safety briefing led by Expedition 29 Commander Mike Fossum, cosmonauts Shkaplerov, Ivanishin and astronaut Burbank received congratulatory satellite calls from their family members and Russian dignitaries.

MISSION PROGRAM

DEORBIT

Soyuz TMA-22 undocked from the ISS on April 27, 2012 at 8:18 UTC and landed safely near Arkalyk, Kazakhstan at 11:45 UTC the same day. The spacecraft’s departure ended Expedition 30, while cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and astronauts André Kuipers and Donald Roy Pettit remained aboard the station to begin Expedition 31.
In January 2013, the descent capsule was installed near the building of the airport in the city of Kemerovo.
This launch ended the exploitation of manned spacecraft of the Soyuz TMA series, which used analog control systems. They were replaced by digital manned spacecraft of the Soyuz TMA-M series.
The second flight of Anton Shkaplerov into space.
